Although Kurds and Kurdish religious scholars and Sufis have played a significant role in the formation of Muslim civilization, culture and knowledge, only rarely have seminars been offered about them. This course is an attempt to introduce influential historical Kurdish figures and their share in the construction of Muslim knowledge, culture and religious movements. It will deal with several questions such as how have these thinkers influenced Islamic thought from the 17th century onwards? What has been the situation of religion in general in a Kurdish context? How did Kurdish religious Ulama and Sufis contribute to Sufi reform and what is sometimes called Neo-Sufism? What relationship can one define between religion and nationalism in early modern and modern Kurdistan? This Seminar tries to deal with such questions through discussing religion in Kurdistan in general and specifically via studying figures like Ibrahim ibn Ḥasan al-Kurani (1616–1690), Said Nursi (1877–1960) and Sheikh Said of Piran (1865–1925) in connection with their cultural and social backgrounds. Kurani was a pre-eminent Islamic scholar and reformist of the 17th century. His works were known in his lifetime from Morocco to Java and from Istanbul to Yemen. He was an influential apologist for the views of the famous mystic of Andalusian origin Ibn ʿArabi (d. 1240). Nursi, commonly known with the honorifics Bedi’uzzaman (meaning "wonder of the age") and Ustad (meaning "master"), was a Muslim theologian and mystic who wrote the famous Qur'anic commentary of “Risala-yi Nur.” Believing that modern science and logic marked the way into the future, Nursi advocated teaching modern sciences in religious schools. Another significant feature from the Kurdish context is Sheikh Said of Piran. He was a sheikh of the Naqshbandi order and a Sunni Sufi freedom fighter originally from Amed (Diyarbakir) in Turkey and led a rebellion against Turkish rule in 1925. From a comparative interreligious perspective the current of mysticism in Christianity which is often regarded as a marginal aspect of the Christian tradition only will be taken into account. Relying on a modern comprehensive monograph on this tradition, the question of sources for reformist dynamics in Christianity, developing from regional centres, will be pursued.
