Comment
This course is an examination of the artistic, sociological and racial impact of jazz music on American culture. The focus will be on the music, artists and events surrounding what is America’s unique art form, the origins of the music in the African-American community, the various musical and historical influences that have characterized jazz and how a 120 year evolution of this music has been marked with great achievements and numerous challenges. In this course, students will train their listening skills as well as conduct research on selected aspects of jazz music. No prior knowledge of music and Black history are necessary. To participate in the course, students must have a good competency of English as many of the readings, recordings and videos assigned are presented in American vernacular language (‘slang’).
