The "Uprising of June 17, 1953" is the name given to the popular uprising that saw a wave of strikes, mass demonstrations and political protests in the GDR in the days around 17 June 1953. In that conflagration, political, economic and social demands were made also in Thuringia. This course is the first of a series of parts of a project based on "citizen science", in which the social history of a crucial year that forever changed and shaped the GDR's 40-year experiment. In this section, students will locate specific biographies of Thuringians who were affected by the events of 1953. They will then create exhibit boards about them to attach to the sides of the History Mobile, a "museum on wheels" that will then tour throughout Thuringia in search of local stories and documentation. In a future StuFu, students will edit the conversations and documentation of encounters with eyewitnesses collected during tours of Thuringia and select for future use those photos and written documents that are representative of many shared experiences.
A central component of this StuFus is that the students decide together what material to use and how to integrate it into our ongoing work. In addition, preparations are being made for a public presentation of the results in a new exhibition to be shown for a second tour throughout Thuringia. Special attention will be given to comparing aspects of everyday life under a young system, e.g. governance, press and other media, social and cultural life, education, religion, economy, urban life, village life and agriculture, etc.
In this StuFu, basic knowledge of exhibition design (formulation of exhibition texts, presentation in space/on panels, use of digital tools, interaction formats, etc.) will be developed and applied to the exhibition as an example. The course is aimed at participants of previous courses as well as new participants. The StuFu will be held in English, in exceptional cases explanations will be given in German.
Four Tuesday evenings will be combined and exchanged for a weekend excursion to the Haus der Spuren, the museum in Bad Langensalza directed by Dr. Luick-Thrams. The field trip will provide students with hands-on experience using narrative history and primary documents. Tuesday evening sessions will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.; there will be no "Academic Quarter Hour."
