The contributions of professional civil society and civic education to democracy in Germany and Europe, and to the European idea itself have been proven far and wide – but what is it exactly, how does it work and what chances and challenges lie in it in the year 2022? This course will serve as an introduction to the work and practices of European non-formal education, both as a tool for the teaching and promotion of Human Rights and as a potential field of work. Additionally, it will use the Democracy Game Box to introduce the students to game-based learning and allow them to gain first-hand experiences in non-formal education by using DEMOGAMES games. It is aimed at students from all disciplines and can be held in English or German. The course is structured as a block seminar with an introductory session followed by four day-long blocks of sessions.

This course will serve as an introduction to the work and practices of European non-formal education, both as a tool for the teaching and promotion of Human Rights and as a potential field of work. Additionally, it will use the games developed during the EU-funded project “DEMOGAMES: Analog and Digital Game-Based-Learning Tools for Youth Work (2019-22)” to introduce the students to game-based learning and allow them to gain first-hand experiences in non-formal education by using DEMOGAMES games. It is aimed at students from all disciplines and can be held in English or German. The course is structured as a block seminar with an introductory session followed by four day-long blocks of sessions. The evaluation and examination will consist of two parts: - co-facilitating a 45 mins exercise during session 8 or 9 - term paper (min: 7 pages) Outline: Session 1: Introduction to the course Session 2: Introduction to Non-formal education in Europe Sessions 3 & 4: How to develop a project in non-formal education Session 5: Introduction to Game-Based learning Sessions 6 & 7: Introducing Demogames Session 8-9: Facilitating Games Session 10: Reflecting and Evaluating non-formal education Session 11: Civic Education as a Career Session 12-13: Discussion of Term Papers
