Online: https://onlinephilfak.uni-erfurt.de/ Prerequisites: We will examine several literary works and their film adaptations, focussing on how the author's original intentions (as far as they can be known) are heeded or ignored by screenwriters and directors. The reading list will be chosen from among a group of works that center around various psychological, social and political issues. Possible choices are criminal violence in modern society (Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange), language as a gauge of social acceptance (Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion), human behavior crushed and re-structured by Totalitarianism (Orwell’s 1984, Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451), the “American Dream” and excesses of wanton Capitalism (Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby), emotional abuse and dependence in a domestic environment (Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Participants will take an exam and give a research presentation. NOTE: This course is for advanced students who enjoy reading literature and discussing ideas.
