Comment
This seminar will be a critical introduction to African state-formation in the wake of formal decolonization. It is looking to complicate hegemonic historiographies of the global diffusion and widespread adoption of the Western nation-state model which is pervasive in much of Political Science and International Relations’ literature. In order to understand the historical contingencies and particularities of postcolonial African societies and their respective political institutions, the course will address various dimensions: the (dis)continuities of precolonial formations, the global political economy of the post-WWII era, the politics of international law with particular emphasis on the UN system, social transformations at the time of declining imperial influence, and political philosophies and projects at the heart of African anticolonialism. Rather than reiterating discourses of ‘state-failure’ and developmentalism, the course will enable students to give a nuanced and interdisciplinary account of the broader international and intellectual currents that impacted Africa's political fate in the 19th and 20th century.
