"Unterrichtssprache des Seminars ist Englisch. // "Writings by women have only in the past 50 years begun to enter the British literary canon. However, the tradition of women’s writing is much older and richer than that. This seminar will explore the issues different periods of women's writing addressed and how female writers navigate(d) being a woman in the literary world. We will discuss the varying circumstances under which women wrote and write and the role that aspects such as class and race have played and still play in their writings. We will read three texts that will serve as case studies: Charlotte Brontë’s seminal novel Jane Eyre (early women's writing), Jean Rhys’s re-writing of Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea (postmodern women’s writing) and Sarah Moss’s “Brexit”-novel Ghost Wall (contemporary women’s writing). By the end of the seminar, students will be able to: identify key issues and topics relating to women’s writing, define theoretical concepts related to women’s writing, give a chronological overview of developments in women’s writing, and interpret characteristics of specific texts relating to their historical context and theoretical framework."
