Kommentar
In the ancient Graeco-Roman world, individuals often resorted to magical practices in an attempt to manipulate supernatural entities that could do their bidding. But how violent were these practices that, in ancient times, were usually labelled with the highly negative term goeteia? And who exactly resorted to them? These are two important questions that lie at the very heart of the study of ancient magic and that this course will seek to answer through an examination of literary, epigraphical, and archaeological material ranging from the eight century BC to approximately the fifth century AD. This course will therefore illustrate the important role that gender and violence played within the realm of magical practices as well as how their social and cultural construction influenced the way individuals conceived and used magic in different parts of the Graeco-Roman world. Overall, the course is held in English, but students are nevertheless allowed to write their term papers in German.
