History as a discipline has many theories and schools of thought, but at its heart is a deeply human story, with individuals and collectives responsible for its shaping. As the focus of history has shifted from ‘Great Man’ history to the Alltagsgeschichte of ‘ordinary people’, we as historians have begun better to appreciate the role of the individual, while also casting light on people and communities that have otherwise been marginalised or elided from dominant historical narratives. This course invites students to engage with queer (LGBTQIA+) history through a bottom-up approach. Each seminar, we will look towards placing the individual at the core of queer history—by engaging in microhistorical analysis of case studies of historical gay men and lesbian women, as well as transgender, non-binary, bisexual, intersex, and asexual people. In the process, we will work closely with primary sources, and ask vital questions of these queer histories that, in turn, can be applied to the practice of history as a whole. These include, but are not limited to: • How do we platform the historical voices of whose who have been denied their voice by their contemporaries? • What challenges do we as historians face when applying shifting lexicons and conceptualisations of self to historical personalities? • To what degree must historians accept the authoritative voice of sources, and to what extent is there room to ‘read between the lines’? • What can limited, individual stories tell us about broader, ‘big picture’ history? • Is all history queer history? Throughout this course, students will be encouraged to and supported in original research that is designed to hone their skills as emerging historians. By the end of the course, students should having working practical knowledge of primary source-based research, the synthesis of a variety of differing (and often violently contradictory) sources, a greater understanding of the relationship between the personal and the wide-ranging, and familiarity with pressing debates and disputes within the historical discipline as regards best practice. Above all, students will recognise and appreciate the importance of queer history as an emergent field in history, not only as a sub-discipline in its own right, but as a vital component to the discipline as a whole.
