IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO JOIN THE SEMINAR, ALSO FOR BA-STUDENTS! Postcolonial approaches have become widely accepted as a method of unveiling structural racism and exposing Eurocentric attitudes. Postcolonial movements made media and politics aware of the ongoing bias in “white” knowledge production and established the field of Postcolonial Studies in academia. This seminar looks at the historical emergence of the postcolonial movement and asks to what extent it differs from its predecessor: anticolonial activism. After all, anticolonial activism and thought of the 1950s and 1960s has had similar purposes and equally raised awareness about subtle forms of Western domination. This seminar seeks to define anticolonialism and postcolonialism by looking at their functionality in historical societies. It ask whether there is a linear development from anticolonialism to postcolonialism or whether one of them is more “indigenous” and the other more “European.” To this end, we will read classics of anticolonial and postcolonial literature, place them in a historical context, and evaluate their impact. We will also invite experts and activists to class for discussion. Requirements are active participation, small presentations, and a close reading of the assigned texts. You will write a final paper during the semester break. FOR ANY QUESTIONS AND REGISTRATION FOR LATECOMERS PLEASE CONTACT florian.wagner@uni-erfurt.de
