Comment
This seminar will provide an introduction to the sociology of race. We will read and discuss sociological insights into the concept of race and racial inequalities, as well as research on white privilege, in particular on the concept of white fragility. As part of the seminar, students will work in small groups to tackle a topic of their choice related to racial inequality and present their projects in class. The leaning objective of this course is that students gain basic knowledge on the sociology of race and racism as well as how to identify and analyze race as a social construct. The course also aims to foster students’ core competencies of critical thinking, creativity, and team work.

Literature

Literature will be announced in the first sessions. Readings include: Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (2013) "Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in America", as well as Robin DiAngelo (2018) "White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism."
