Comment
According to Ina Schabert, in the Victorian period both literature and the visual arts represented male and female identity in a highly differential masquerade. In this role-playing of differences, sex became gender in an exemplary way. Following this thesis, we want to study Victorian fiction, poetry and painting as highly stylised ‘orders’ of the genders and their various representatives, and we will be interested both in the functions and the dysfunctionings of these gendered gazes/voices. The seminar will consist of three parts: in the first, we want to look at gender theory, both in its conservative Victorian form and its more critical version of today. Using this historical and theoretical framework, we will then look at Victorian poetry and shorter fiction together with Victorian painting, and will study works by, among others, Tennyson, the Brownings and the Rossettis in close comparison with visual representations by Millais, Morris, Burne-Jones etc. Some of these artists worked in both the textual and the visual media, which testifies to the close relationship of voices and gazes in Victorian art. In the third part of the seminar, we will study Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and, if there is time, Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations (1861), both the texts and their illustrations, using our gender (and) intermediality framework on these two highly canonical Victorian novels by a female and a male author.

Participants are expected to have read chapters 6.1 and 6.2 in Ina Schabert’s Literaturgeschichte: Eine neue Darstellung aus der Sicht der Geschlechterforschung (Stuttgart: Kröner 1997).
