Space is much more than the geographical stage in which our actions take place. It is condition, medium and outcome of social relations (Lefebvre 1991) and, as such, it offers a privilege point of view to understand an array of phenomena and processes in human history. In religious studies, the ‘spatial turn’ put forward by Knott (2015) has opened up a new field in history of religion that incorporates insights from spatial theory. This course situates the spatial approach to the study of religion in an historical perspective. By zooming in on specific examples of Mediterranean and South Asian cities, from the rise of urbanism to the present time (Athens, Rome, Varanasi, New York), this course introduces students to the uses, productions and entanglements of religious spaces and their material and immaterial effects. Emphasis will especially put on on the production, adaptation, sharing and contestation of spaces of small (e.g. household, neighbourhoods) and large (e.g. sanctuaries, landscapes) scale and, on the role played by different collective and individual actors, while visibility of religion will be approached in both its material and discursive dimension. Religious architectures, practices and media of religious communication are examined on the ground of specific urban circumstances which will be always described during the class. Students do not need to have previous knowledge of the topic.
