Comment
The seminar deals with mediated forms of pop culture at the intersection of postcolonial, power-critical and (neo)feminist perspectives. It circles around the question of whether popular media can transform sociopolitical power relations with its highly ambivalent character that oscillates between commercialization and authenticity, stereotypical images of “others” and empowering counter narratives. With the help of different theoretical understandings of popular culture, public spheres, feminism, intersectionality, and viewership, students will discuss empirical examples to explore how phenomena like oppression and inequality but also resistance and solidarity are mirrored and negotiated in popular culture. The media formats covered in the seminar include postmigrant “niche” media, feminist films, far-right online communication (memes), musical articulations of protest, and prominent actors of an increasingly politicized global/local pop culture. Committed reading of the seminar texts is required so that the seminar can recapitulate the theoretical arguments and focus on the analysis of concrete media formats during the sessions.
