Kick-off Meeting: November, 3, 10am - 11.30am in LG4, Room D07. At the first meeting we will schedule the sessions for the upcoming semester. For any question regarding the seminar please contact florian.wagner@uni-erfurt.de. If you are interested in joining the seminar please also register for the Moodle classroom (You received the university-wide Access Key in a seperate email) The Seminar is in English, contributions in German are possible and welcome. See English commentary below. In the German-speaking world, the term deportation evokes the crimes of the Nazis and describes the forced transport of human beings to concentration and death camps. After 1945, the world kept on using the word deportation to describe any kind of forced removal, expulsion and involuntary displacement. After the 1960s, it applied mostly to expellees and migrants from the Global South. Curiously, although deportations originated in fascist projects of ethnic cleansing, liberal democracies in the Global North (Europe, USA) and International Organizations (UNHCR, IOM) regarded them as a legitimate means to expel migrants and return them to the Global South. This seminar looks a the long history of deportations in Europe and within the Global South. It examines the paradox of “liberal” forced deportations after 1945 and mainly focuses on forced returns of unwanted and illegalized migrants between the 1950s and the 2000s. We look at deportation processes, their legitimization, and their denouncation by NGOs who publicly turned against deportations. In the first part of the seminar we will visit the former camps of Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora to get an idea of what deportation meant in the context of ethnic cleansing. In the second part, we will get in touch with refugee organizations to inquire about their view on explusion and deportation. The seminar is in English but contributions in German are possible and welcome. We will have both on-site meetings in Erfurt and online sessions.
