Robin Wall Kimmerer writes in Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, “In some Native languages, the term for plants translates to ‘those who take care of us’” (Kimmerer 2013, p. 228). This reciprocal practice of care is the essence of decoloniality and of cosmic frequencies oriented towards the infinite (Ferreira da Silva 2022). From Black midwives’ knowledge of the “vibrational, energetic remedies” of flower essences (Amadou 2023) to Manulani Aluli Meyer’s ode to “holographic epistemology” (Aluli Meyer 2013), histories of rootwork and reciprocity are claiming space within contemporary Black and Indigenous studies. If, as Aluli Meyer asserts, “Indigenous is simply a synonym for that which has endured,” (Auli Meyer 2013, p. 98), how does that which has endured inform our understandings of healing and reciprocity? What does the dynamism of plant life teach us about scales beyond the global and the planetary (Chakrabarty 2021)? What does it mean to be held in and to act with this knowledge?
