Registration

Comment
This seminar explores the validity and scope of (post-)colonial theory by examining its applicability to non-colonized states. In recent decades, the idea that no part of the world escaped colonial domination or coloniality as a cultural formation has become widely accepted, particularly within postcolonial and decolonial theory. Yet several important societies in the Global South claim never to have been colonized and thus appear to challenge assumptions about the omnipresence of colonial and neocolonial structures. What can their perspectives contribute to debates on coloniality? The seminar will examine case studies such as Ethiopia, Liberia, and Thailand. At the same time, it will address the significance of the colonial period for formally colonized states, some historians from the Global South having argued that colonial rule was of limited importance when compared to the long histories and achievements of indigenous civilizations. The aim of the seminar is both to introduce students to postcolonial theory and to investigate whether its concepts apply to cases of alleged non-coloniality. It provides an introduction to colonialism, postcolonial theory, and related methods, and applies them to selected historical case studies. Methodologically, the seminar combines historical approaches with the transdisciplinary concepts of postcolonialism, coloniality, and decoloniality that have been developed by literary, social, and political sciences. Exam format: Written assignment; oral/practical exam
