Contemporary theory and scholarship suggest that literature plays a role in how we define, talk about, and relate to the natural world. It also goes without saying that narratives intended and eventually read-aloud to/read by children can hold significant influence over how they perceive and relate to the world around them. As such, this course aims to explore how illustrators and authors construct and represent nature and human-nature relationships in contemporary picture books and consider how they might influence young readers' environmental imagination. Accordingly, the course is designed to introduce students to the formal and aesthetic properties of picture books as well as environmental literary criticism (also known as ecocriticism). Outside of seminar meetings, students will be expected to complete assigned readings of secondary texts and conduct research themselves in order to create presentations and annotated bibliographies on given topics. The seminar block sessions themselves will include the prepared student oral presentations followed by the heart of the course: "hands-on" workshops where students will read, examine, discuss, and analyze picture book case studies. Note: Students should not assume that because the primary texts are picture books that, this course will not require reading or effort. We will read a considerable amount of scholarship from the fields of ecocriticism and children's literature to provide the tools for analyzing picture books through an ecocritical lens. As such, adequate preparation for the sessions (in terms of completing assigned secondary text readings and the presentation/bibliography assignments) is a must, and active participation in the sessions' picture book workshops is also expected. COURSE FORMAT This is a block course with some components online and others in-person.

Students should obtain a copy of the following: Garrard, Greg. Ecocriticism: The New Critical Idiom. 2nd ed. Abingdon/New York: Routledge, 2011. All other material will be provided.
