Comment
Innovations in communication technologies mostly happen internationally as well as interculturally. In the British Empire, (new) media were often based on raw material from the colonies whereas the finished media products were traded across the Empire just as they are traded today throughout the postcolonial world. In this seminar, we want to study the thematisation of other, non-literary media in three important contemporary novels in English and study their reflection of, as well as participation in, (post-)colonial media culture. We start with Salman Rushdie’s The Moor’s Last Sigh (1995), a novel closely related to the medium of 20th-century painting. This novel invents, and works through, the complete oeuvre of the fictitious Indian painter Aurora da Gama, conjuring up the interculturality both of her life and of contemporary visual art in general. We will continue with an equally visually engaged/engaging novel, Gail Jones’ Sixty Lights (2005). Like The Moor’s Last Sigh, the novel is partly set in India but, as an Australian text, it also features scenes in England and Australia. Sixty Lights is focused on the medium of photography but it also presents an eminent female artist. The last novel that we study, Tabish Khair’s Filming (2007) returns us to one of the themes of Rushdie’s novel in that it works through the rise of the Hindi film industry in Mumbai. This seminar introduces you to the internationality and postcoloniality of modern media. You will read three substantial and internationally acclaimed contemporary novels in English. Working on these novels will show you how strongly literature (in English) is interrelated with media and cultures other than its ‘home’. You will also come to analyse the different roles and capacities of different media in the development of individual and collective identities.

Literature
Please buy two of the novels in the following editions: The Moor’s Last Sigh in any of the available editions (they all have the same pagination) and Sixty Lights in the available paperback edition. Filming is out of print right now and will be made available on Moodle. Please read (at least) Rushdie’s novel during the semester break.
