Comment
Das Seminar findet in englischer Sprache statt. As non-fictional motion pictures, at first glance documentary films tend to be seen as presenting a factual, objective version of reality. However, as we will learn in this class by analyzing a variety of documentaries on African American history and culture, each documentary film tells a story, constructs its narrative in a complex manner, and presents its particular version of reality in a different way. We will begin this class with examining the theory and concept of the documentary film as a genre. After that, a mix of discussion classes and screenings will make us familiar with a number of different documentary films, film styles and approaches to filmmaking, their theory and practice. Students will form groups, and each group will be responsible for a double session of a film screening, context presentation, analysis, and discussion.
