Overview Doubt and scepticism are powerful tools in the modern zeitgeist. However, they are also often misused, or at least misattributed. Conspiracy theory, misinformation, information “bombs”, and many other problems plague us in the search for truth and understanding, and even just in everyday decision-making. How can we know what is the right thing to do? How can I trust that the information you have provided is reliable? This course will not provide the “right” answer to students, but will focus on the gaps that often exist in “true” stories, political agendas, and the misapplied “scepticism” that some people employ when discussing truth and falsehoods. Lecture Syllabus The seminars are constructed from 7 main topics: Game theory; prisoner’s dilemma & Nash equilibrium; what is a “rational” agent; lies, deception & truth-seeking; infohazards; social deduction games; and epistemology. Structure Each seminar will present the idea for the week, and discuss and explain elements of them, allowing students to ask questions for clarification and interest. This will culminate in a 15-minute break-out session where the students will discuss real-world and invented scenarios of the topic at hand, presenting them shortly at the end of the session. To facilitate this, groups will be organised at the start of the semester, and groups will be encouraged to discuss both the seminars and the assessment outside of the sessions. Assessment Students will submit a 200 word answer to the question posed at the end of each session. There will be 13 of these questions, and students must answer a minimum of 7, and may choose their favourite 4 to be graded (25% each) for their final grade.
