Climate change is arguably the greatest challenge of our time. In the coming years, human-caused global warming will have far-reaching ecological, social, political, and economic consequences and will put democratic societies around the world to the test. Crucially, the technological solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation already exist, but a main barrier to solving the problem is people – climate denial has grown in recent years and a rollback of climate policies around the world is imminent. In this course, we investigate the role of the media in this process. Media at large and journalism in particular play a central role in communicating knowledge, opinions, and emotions about climate change to the public, thereby influencing not only people's awareness and actions but also political decisions and public debates on the issue. In this seminar, we will therefore examine how the media deals with climate change. We will focus on three broad areas: 1) (climate) journalism, its content and quality criteria, 2) platforms and non-journalistic media such as influencers and alternative media and their role in promoting climate-denialist misinformation and 3) public opinion towards climate change as an outcome of the former two, with a special focus on pluralistic ignorance, i.e. misperceptions of how others think about climate change. In the course, students will engage critically with the literature on media and climate, practically analyze and criticize climate coverage and give regular short presentations.
