Comment
The seminar focuses on key questions such as how „global knowledge” and “global culture“ is constructed through communication and shared worldwide. Students will deal with basic interdisciplinary readings from communication studies, cultural and postcolonial studies, and sociology to examine the concept of global knowledge society and culture and their role in global communication relationships. Based on the common conceptual basis, students will investigate several cultural subsystems and evaluate their global communicative structures in small groups or individual projects. Examples include global film cultures, the fine arts, the literary market and the education system. Through in-depth examination of global interdependence in the field of culture, questions about the cross-border transfer of narratives in collective memories, the participation and representation in global scientific knowledge production, the implementation of global citizenship education/global learning in schools, the dynamics of global online community in Wikipedia, and the construction of global imaginaries in the fine arts are discussed in the seminar. The collaborative work in the seminar will result in working papers, which document the status quo of global connectivity and communication in these respective areas of human creativity from a postcolonial perspective. All information about the Moodle room and required literature will be shared in the first session of the seminar.
