Comment
Academic Writing for Public Policy is designed to develop the critical reading, research, argumentation, and scholarly writing skills required for master’s-level study in public policy. The course approaches academic writing as participation in scholarly conversations and guides students progressively from identifying research problems and formulating focused research questions to critically engaging with literature, synthesising evidence, constructing persuasive academic arguments, and producing coherent scholarly texts. Students develop practical competencies in literature searching and organisation, effective use of evidence, academic paper structure, academic integrity and referencing, revision and peer review, developing their academic voice, and translating research into policy briefs for decision-making audiences. The course also introduces students to university library resources and develops critical AI literacy for the responsible and transparent use of generative AI in academic research and writing. Through seminars, guided independent writing drills, peer engagement, and formative feedback, students apply and strengthen these skills throughout the semester.
