Comment
The course circles around the question of how „global knowledge” and “global culture“ is communicatively constructed and shared worldwide. In order to approach an answer, students will deal with basic texts from postcolonial studies and about the “knowledge society”. Together we will discuss how postcolonial approaches can enrich media and communication studies. After the collaborative development of a conceptual basis, we will evaluate communicative structures and processes in the cultural subsystems of global society, including film, the fine arts, literature, and science. In small group and/or individual explorative research projects, students will analyze selected dimensions of global interaction and communication within the named fields. More precisely, exemplary projects can deal with questions such as the following: Which kind of narratives are translated worldwide? What are excluded stories of an imagined global collective memory? Does everybody have access to the global centers of scientific knowledge production? How do schools implement postcolonial approaches in order to educate “global citizens”? Does knowledge diffusion work the same in different regions of the world? Who produces and shares the knowledge on Wikipedia? Who shares (audio-)visual and aesthetic symbols in the world? Does art promote a “global knowledge gap”? The discussions will result in working papers, which document the status quo of global connectivity and communication in these areas of human creativity from a postcolonial perspective. A Moodle room will be available for the course. The link and further information will be given to all participants in the first session.
