How are gender and religion connected? Are their interactions best understood through the concept of intersectionality, or is the relationship even more complex? In this seminar, we will explore these questions from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. We will begin by examining key theoretical approaches to the study of gender and religion and then turn to selected case studies to see how these ideas can be applied in practice. A central focus of the course is a dual perspective. On the one hand, we will trace and discuss how the academic field of the study of religion has historically approached questions of gender, and which theories and concepts are currently being debated. On the other hand, we will analyze concrete case studies in order to test which methodological and theoretical approaches best help us understand the complex intersections between gender roles, religion, and other social factors such as class, education, ethnicity, and related dimensions of social difference.
