Comment
This course seeks to examine the intersection between gender identity and religious experience and practice in the Mediterranean world, spanning from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity. Given the breadth of its geographical and chronological scope, primary attention will be devoted to the Graeco-Roman religious tradition and to early Christianity, considered both in terms of continuity and transformation. The intersection of gender identities and roles with religion offers a particularly fruitful field of inquiry, as it reveals the ways in which the religious sphere could open up spaces for agency and provide opportunities for the assertion of individual autonomy, capable of challenging pre-existing social and cultural norms. In this regard, special emphasis will be placed on religious experiences and practices such as ‘magic’, prophecy, martyrdom, asceticism, institutional religious offices, community leadership and authority, as well as curses and miracles. The course will therefore aim to identify how the exercise of these practices was articulated differently according to gender, and how it enabled forms of distinction and claims to autonomy in relation to the established socio-cultural framework. Particular emphasis will be placed on women, in view of the more pronounced subversive potential of their actions – enabled by the openings afforded in the religious sphere – within the context of a patriarchal society such as that of the ancient Mediterranean world. At the same time, attention will also be paid to instances in which such attempts at asserting autonomy proved unsuccessful, understood as moments in which the traditional social order was reasserted, together with its attendant familial and social roles. 7.
