Comment
This course consists of two basic elements: practical pronunciation and listening skills, both of which are oriented towards American English. At the segmental level, the practical pronunciation component covers the production of the English phonemes that cause difficulty for learners of English as a second language. The supra-segmental level offers practice in aspects of connected speech such as weakening, rhythm, melody and stress. Although this course is primarily practical, it will cover some theoretical elements of English phonetics and phonology. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will beused throughout the course and will be tested alongside a passage to be read out.
