Only qT This course consists of two essential elements: practical pronunciation and listening skills, oriented towards British English. At the segmental level, the practical pronunciation component covers the production of the English phonemes that cause difficulty for learners of English as a second language. The supra-segmental level offers practice in aspects of connected speech such as weakening, rhythm, melody and stress (nuclear tones). Although this language-laboratory-based course is primarily practical, theoretical elements of English phonology will be involved in explaining the production of English speech. The phonetic alphabet will be used throughout the course and will be tested alongside a passage to be read out. Preference will be given to students attending Dr Lorenz’s lecture on Phonetics. Course requirements: DPT 75+ points. Attendance is compulsory.
