Comment
The seminar examines and compares various manifestations of modern racism, focusing on its communicative forms including news journalism, entertainment media, hate speech in social networks as well as hidden stereotypes in everyday talk. Students first develop a holistic understanding of the phenomenon of racism, using discourse and postcolonial theories as well as socio-psychological approaches. The link to communication studies is being established by examining racism in specific communicative spaces (public sphere theories), as a communication practice (rhetoric analysis, visual analysis) and within certain communication systems (journalism, pop culture, everyday life). In addition, we will shed light on the relationship between racism as a discourse and as a social practice by analyzing concrete examples: e.g. anti-Muslim racism as media representation, anti-Semitic narratives in social media, anti-black exoticism in film. Moreover, intersectional entanglements between racism, classism and sexism, will be explored. After developing a multidimensional theoretical framework, we will turn to various concrete case studies and compare them with each other, e.g. anti-Muslim racism in India, anti-Black racism in the USA and Latin America, anti-Asian racism in Europe. The aim of the seminar is to raise analytical awareness of the phenomenon of racism and to impart knowledge about regional/national specifics.
