Comment
This course aims to prepare students to use English as a global lingua franca in different communicative situations. The focus will be on features of intercultural communication concerning, e.g. directness, politeness, and non-verbal communication. Research on English as a lingua franca indicates that it is essential for the success of intercultural encounters to develop listening comprehension skills for several non-native accents of English on the one hand. On the other hand, it is equally important to familiarise oneself with different, potentially difficult intercultural situations. The course will provide practical exercises for and simulations of these situations. Students are requested to work on projects in small groups. Entrance requirements: OPT score of 75+.
