Kommentar
Historienfilme bieten seit über einem Jahrhundert einen immens populären außerakademischen Zugang zu Geschichtswissen. Die aufwändigen Produktionsprozesse, geprägt von technischer Innovation, künstlerischer Ambition und oft einer großen Anzahl von Mitwirkenden vor und hinter der Kamera, rücken die Medialität des Films in den Mittelpunkt jeder Analyse. Thematische Dauerbrenner unter den historischen Hintergründen sind die Antike und das Mittelalter, zwei besonders fern wirkende Epochen, die je nach Intention des jeweiligen Werks Sehnsuchtsorte, Schreckensszenarien und/oder Spiegelbilder der Gegenwart sein können. Das Seminar wird anhand ausgewählter Beispiele von Filmen mit antikem oder mittelalterlichem Setting das Verhältnis von akademischer Forschung und Historienfilm analysieren. Dazu werden die Filme selbst, Sekundärliteratur und Primärquellen diskutiert. Besondere Schwerpunkte sind Gewaltdarstellungen sowie Fragen nach Geschlecht und Agency.

For over a century, historical films have provided an immensely popular non-academic access to historical knowledge. The elaborate production processes, characterised by technical innovation, artistic ambition, and often a broad number of contributors in front of and behind the camera, put the focus of any analysis of film on its mediality. Thematic evergreens among historical settings are both Antiquity and the Middle Ages, two particularly distant seeming eras that, depending on the intention of the respective work, may serve as places of longing, horror scenarios and/or a mirror of the present. The seminar will analyse the relationship between academic research and historical film using selected examples of films set in Antiquity or the Middle Ages. For this aim, the films themselves, as well as secondary literature and primary sources will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on depictions of violence and questions of gender and agency.
