Comment
This seminar aims to answer the above question in three steps. First, we will assess the current situation by considering the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal five, Gender Equality, and have a nuanced view on the global gender care gap and the worldwide adoption and diffusion of new media technologies. In a second step, we will then reflect the basic interrelation between new media technologies and the gender care gap from three different theoretical viewpoints: women’s empowerment through new media technologies, a feminist-historical lens on women and household technologies, and a broader view on the transgressions between family- and work-life enabled by new media technologies. In the final third part of the seminar, we will discuss and compare selected communicative phenomena in this area across the globe (e.g., ambient co-presence in South-East Asian migrant workers’ transnational family communication, the case of M-Pesa in Kenya, the use of parental control apps among US parents) and situate them concerning our initial question: Can new media technologies ease the gender gap in unpaid care work? Students will learn to critically assess emerging phenomena in new media technologies regarding their culturally situated positive and negative impacts on gender equality, namely the gender care gap.
